The Brookfield Zoo field trip - I will be sending an email to indicate who our chaperones are.  Remember to pack a lunch for your child that day and have them dress accordingly.

HALLOWEEN:  Students may bring their costumes to school with them on Friday, October 31.  We will put our costumes on just prior to the parade, which starts at 1:00.  After the parade, we will head back to our classroom for our Halloween Party.  (Please remember:  no props of any kind are allowed which resemble a weapon.)

Classroom updates:

MATH
Students began taking their addition, subtraction and multiplication fact tests.  We try to take our fact tests every Friday.  Once your child passes the addition and subtraction fact tests, they move on to a multiplication fact of their choice.  (There will not be a specific fact assigned to test each week.)

The chapter 2 test is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14.  Because of the early dismissal on Friday, your child can also take a fact test on Tuesday if they choose.  (We are not meeting for math on Friday.)

We will be doing a project which involves 6 regular sized (8-15 pounds) pumpkins.  Before I go out to purchase them, if you have an extra pumpkin lying around, I would be happy to take it off your hands!  We will be doing our project the week of Halloween.

SPELLING
My class is taking the List 7 posttest this Friday, October 10.
Next week, we will be working with Halloween words, so homework and testing will be a little different.  Every student will receive a packet to work on and there will not be a pretest.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Students are working on developing their descriptive writing skills.  First, we described a mystery object.  Currently, we are writing about a monster we created.  Our final project will be to sell a haunted house using descriptive language.

As we continue reading Ivan, we are bringing in several other texts including short excerpts on elephants and Martin Luther King, Jr.; and two short stories: Two Days in May and Night of the Pufflings.  These titles lend well to our essential question of:  "How can others' accomplishments and my own beliefs inspire me to stand up for what I feel is right?"

Lastly, is your child reading nightly?  The one proven, and simple, way to improve vocabulary, comprehension and fluency is to read, read, read.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are starting our Downers Grove unit next week.

SCIENCE
The chapter 4 test on ecosystems is scheduled for Friday, October 17.  Your child received a study guide to help with preparing.  In addition to the study guide, all of the papers in your child's science folder are helpful when studying.

Have a great, long weekend!
