Week of April 23, 2012

Hello parents and students!  This Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day.  We've discussed many different ways we could protect and conserve planet Earth over the last week.  Here, we are pictured holding our Earth Day art.

Our school has organized a wonderful Book Angel Book Drive to collect books for schools in need.  Students have been asked to bring in new or used books and the grade level with the most books collected will win a prize!

Here is our upcoming week in a nutshell:

MATH
This upcoming week, we will be focusing on chapter 23.  The skills covered in this chapter are multiples of 10 and 100; introduction to estimating products, multiplying 2-digit numbers, and multiplying 3-digit numbers.  Our divided by 4 test will be on Friday.  The only retakes available for this test will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the following week, as we will be focusing on divided by 5.

READING
During our poetry focus, we are discussing simile, hyperbole, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and personification.  Students are responsible for knowing the definition to rhythm, rhyme, beat, line, stanza and pattern for their test on Tuesday, 5/1.

ENGLISH
There is a letter quiz on Monday, 4/23.  Students will be proof reading and editing a letter with many errors.  In addition, I told students if they are able to label each letter part correctly, they will receive 1/2 point extra credit for label.  We will be sending our pen pal letters out this week as well!  We are also working in unit 5 on introductory words, commas in a series, writing good sentences and quotation marks.  Looks as though we will be ready for the unit 5 test on Friday, 5/4.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are continuing chapter 3 as we discuss new customs in lesson 2. Also, there will be a letter coming home discussing Culture Day.  Be on the look out for that on Wednesday.
