Week of January 14, 2013

I hope all of our families are having a great start to 2013!

There a just a few reminders about our upcoming week:
Our In-School field trip "Matter Matters" is on Monday, January 14.  The presentation our class will attend is from 12-1:30.
The district Spelling Bee is approaching.  To prepare students, our class will have a practice bee on Thursday, 1/17.  The class bee to determine two winners who will compete with the other third grade classes is on Thursday, 1/24.  The District Bee is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5.  A packet of the words used for the bee was sent home this week.

Here is our upcoming week in a nutshell:

MATH
We will not have math class on Monday due to our in-school field trip.  On Tuesday, we will review chapter 5 and any students who have not finished their CYP will have an opportunity to do so.  Because so many students were unable to finish the CYP, I am postponing the chapter 5 test until Thursday, January 17.  We will then begin chapter 6 on measurement.

READING
Our class will have a vocab quiz on Tuesday, 1/15 on the Nights of the Pufflings words.  We will continue using this story and others to practice deciphering between fact and opinion. There will be a comprehension test on this story on Wednesday, 1/16.

SPELLING
Monday:  Pretest List 14 (homophones)
Homework - Cursive worksheet (whole class)
Tuesday:  Homework - ABC order in spelling journal (nonchallenge group)
Activity 1 in spelling journal (challenge group)
Wednesday:  Homework - 10 sentences using all 20 words in spelling journal (nonchallenge group)
Activity 2 in spelling journal (challenge group)
Friday:  Final test

ENGLISH
We will continue writing our autobiographies.  This project will continue over the course of several weeks as we revise and edit to eventually type.

SCIENCE
Insulators are due on Tuesday, 1/15.  We will then focus our attention on social studies.

SOCIAL STUDIES
In chapter 3, we will begin discussing various cultures.

Have a wonderful week!
