This last week has been a good one in third grade! The weather is quickly changing and our classes go outside for P.E. and recess. Please make sure your child has a jacket with them when they come to school.
I'd like to thank the parents who are sending in supplies for our Johnny Appleseed celebration on Wednesday...We appreciate you!
Please remember to send an apple which has been peeled and cored on Wednesday for our homemade applesauce. We are excited about our celebration and learning more about Mr. Appleseed.
Here is our upcoming week in a nutshell:
MATH
Students will be tested on Chapter 1 on Tuesday, 9/25. We will then begin chapter 2 on addition and subtraction. Addition mad minutes will begin on Friday, 9/28. Students will have 2 minutes to answer 30 addition facts correctly. We took a practice test this past week (and will take a few more next week) and many students finished in a minute or less. WOW! If you think your child is struggling, please spend some time reviewing addition facts before the test on Friday. When necessary, each retake loses 1 point. Those who pass this Friday will receive the 5 full points. Also, we will be pretesting for chapter 2 on Tuesday to make sure I am meeting students' needs.
READING
Parents, your child has a MAP test goal worksheet in their reading folder. This paper will remain in their reading folder for the duration of the year. I've indicated your child's recent reading MAP score as well as their Lexile level on this worksheet. The Lexile level is one way of leveling books according to difficulty. When looking for a good-fit-book for your child, it might be helpful to log onto www.lexile.com to enter the title of the book. This website will provide you with the lexile level of many books. I intend to discuss this further at conferences as well. On Tuesday, students will be tested on the current story we are reading The Lost and Found which is in their volume 1 reading book here at school. This is an open book test. Students can take this book home at any time and return it to school the next day. They also have a vocab test on this selection on Thursday. We will continue working on sequencing and summarizing.
ENGLISH
Students have an English test on unit 1 - the sentence - on Tuesday. We have spent a great deal of time reviewing and preparing for this test. Students are also able to take their English books home to review. The concepts covered are complete sentences, 4 types of sentences, subjects, predicates and run-on sentences. Then we will begin a project called The Me Bag. Directions will be coming home about this project on Wednesday.

We will continue our study of the water cycle. A lesson 2 graded open book review is scheduled for Wednesday.

I am going to try very hard to incorporate some social studies lessons into this week - we will begin discussing continents and oceans.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
