Week of September 12, 2011

Our class designed this portion of our school-wide quilt in honor of September 11. We discussed this tragedy in class today and students drew or wrote a way they would like to honor those who lost their lives 10 years ago.

Hi parents! A few odds and ends:

If you forgot about Scholastic Book Orders, you can send them in on Monday.

DOL quiz on Thursday, 9/15.

Here is our upcoming week in a nutshell:

MATH

Students are going to continue working in chapter 3 on addition this week. We are going to test on these skills on Friday, September 16.

READING

We will continue to teach the students how to utilize the essential reading strategies. In our classes we will demonstrate how the application of these strategies will maximize student comprehension of a range of literary materials. Is your child reading a "Good Fit" book at home? Have them use the I-PICK strategy:

I choose a book

P urpose for reading

I nteresting

C omprehend

K now almost all of the words

SPELLING

Lesson 3 pretest is on Monday with the final test on Friday. This week, students will have 3 homework assignments to complete, all of which are due on Friday.

ENGLISH

We are continuing to work on 'the sentence'. There will be a DOL study guide coming home on Monday to help your child prepare for the quiz on Thursday if needed.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We finished up directions and are moving on to the continents and oceans. I believe the students have a little 'solo' they would like to perform for you...goes a little something like this:

Let's name the seven continents

Let's name the seven continents

Let's name the seven continents,

before we end this song.

Asia, Europe and Africa;

North and South America;

Australia and Antarctica;

And now we've named them all.

Can you guess the tune we're singing to?

Have a great weekend with your loved ones.
