Week of October 18, 2010

Important dates this week:

Monday, 10/18 MAPS testing - reading
Wednesday, 10/20 Early Dismissal
Thursday, 10/21 Book Fair
Friday, 10/22 MAPS testing - math
Failure Notices and Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Here is what to expect this week:

MATH
We will continue working on subtracting larger numbers. Students should be practicing their math facts every night because the first subtraction fast fact test is scheduled for Friday, 10/22. Students need to pass the test by answering 28 out of 30 questions correctly in two minutes or less.
READING
Our continued focus this week is on predicting and cause/effect. Students should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per night.
SPELLING
Spelling list 8 (3 letter clusters) pretest is on Monday; homework will be assigned nightly (3 homework assignments this week) and be due on Friday; final test is on Friday.
ENGLISH
We will finish up our descriptive writing unit this week and then begin nouns.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our study of the continents continues and was pushed back a bit. Students will work with the laptops and be ready do take the continent test on Wednesday, 10/20. Then we begin our study of Downers Grove.
SCIENCE
We will begin our study of the planets this week.
