I just picked up the newest member of our class!

Please welcome our new baby bearded dragon. Our class adopted him from a family that wasn't able to care for him anymore. Unfortunately, as I explained to the class, this happens too often and many animals are put to sleep or set free in the wild. Although this is only one tiny dragon, we are hoping to make a small difference! It is only 4 months old and we won't know if it's a boy or girl until it reaches about 9 months old. Choosing a name for it should be interesting! We are going to feed it lettuce, carrots, crickets and mealworms. (If you make a visit to a pet store and would like to pick up some crickets or mealworms, that would be greatly appreciated by me and the dragon!) Feel free to stop in to visit our new baby!

A special THANK YOU to the Riadi family who is letting us use the dragon's current home!

Academic Update:

Reading - We finished Kid in the Red Jacket and the test will be on Tuesday, September 7. On Wednesday, we will begin studying India and identifying the main idea of what we read.

Spelling - The pretest is on Monday and if a 100% is received, that student may choose the activities to complete for the week. The activities chosen must equal 15 points. Also, to clarify, all students will take the post-test which will include 15 words from the current week, 5 words you should know and 5 words from the previous lesson.

Social Studies - We finished Chapter 4 last week and began preparing for the test, which is on Wednesday, September 19. A review won't be possible on Tuesday due to the early dismissal so please make sure your child has brought the material home to study. We will begin Chapter 5 on Thursday with an activity that will require us to use brown grocery paper bags so if you have a paper bag you can send with your child, please do!

Science - we continue our study of the Human Body. Your child will receive a folder that they will be responsible for containing all of the information they need.

English - We will be discussing Simple Subjects and Predicates. On Friday, there will be a quiz on all that we've covered: four types of sentences, complete/simple subjects and predicates.

My Math group - We will be rounding decimals, using tables and graphs (as well as, creating our own), learning the properties of addition and using compatible numbers. There WILL NOT be a quiz on Friday, September 21 due to the minimal information we will cover. There is a timed test on multiplication facts daily.

Other Updates: Students have collected enough 5th Grade dollars to begin purchasing passes, coupons and other various goodies. The Stetka School Store will officially open on Wednesday, September 19!

Beginning Friday, September 21, I will be implementing a new incentive. All students who have not paid for missing/imcomplete homework will be able to participate in "FUN FRIDAY" where they get 20 minutes to participate in an activity of their choice. Students who have not completed all of their homework for the week will have to work on missing assignments during this time.

All grades will be updated on our online gradebook on Wednesday, September 19. I apologize for the delay in publishing these. Students have received graded work in their mailboxes and have been taking everything home on Fridays.

Reminders: Early dismissal on Tuesday, September 18
